What does “böneutrop” mean in Swedish?

böneutrop
Swedish word-building
call to prayer“ — literally ”prayer-cry-out

Böneutrop means the (Islamic) call to prayer — built from bön (prayer) + utrop (a call or shout). It’s a hot topic in Sweden right now: in the clip, a Sweden Democrats ad asks whether the country should ban böneutrop from mosque loudspeakers. So this one stacked-together word sits right at the center of a real national debate.

The person doing the böneutrop is a böneutropare — that -are ending works just like English “-er” (a caller). Swedish builds words like this all the time, so you can often guess a new noun by splitting it into pieces. In the clip, a Sverigedemokraterna ad asks whether Sweden should bring in a national ban (nationellt förbud) on böneutrop, framing it as people’s right to be free from religion in det offentliga rummet — “the public space.” That phrase is stacked too: offentlig (public) + rum (room, space).
