What does “limpión” mean in Colombian Spanish?

A limpión is a Colombian kitchen towel — the cloth for drying dishes, wiping hands, or covering food. It’s built transparently from limpiar (“to clean”) plus -ón, so even a first-time listener can almost guess it. This is a strong regional tell: where a Colombian reaches for the limpión, an Argentine grabs a repasador, a Mexican a trapo de cocina, and a Spaniard a paño or trapo. Same humble cloth, four different words.

In the tamal workshop a cook recalls her grandmother handing her “un limpión a limpiar la hoja por lado y lado” — a towel to wipe the plantain leaf on both sides. Knowing limpión instantly places a speaker as Colombian (and parts of nearby Andean regions). Don’t confuse it with un limpión meaning “a quick wipe” — context (a kitchen, a cloth) keeps the household sense clear.
