What does “está padre” mean in Mexican Spanish?

In Mexico, padre is not only “father.” Used as an adjective it means cool, great, awesome: está padre means “it’s cool,” and ¡qué padre! is “how awesome!” Intensify it to padrísimo for “amazing.” It is friendly, everyday, and totally gender-fixed — a woman saying está padre is not making a mistake; padre never inflects to padra here. It’s one of the fastest ways to sound like a relaxed Mexican speaker.

The speaker wraps up with “Entonces está padre” — roughly “so, it’s pretty cool.” Outside Mexico the same idea is bacán, chévere, guay, or copado depending on the country, which makes está padre a reliable regional tell. Note the contrast with madre, which in Mexican slang skews negative (un desmadre = chaos); padre good, madre messy.
