Why is “yegua” an insult in Spanish?
“Yegua” is a female horse, but thrown at a person it becomes an insult, almost always aimed at a woman. Depending on the country it lands as “you idiot,” “you brute” or “you coarse, vulgar woman.” The teachable bit is the move itself: Spanish loves turning farm animals into insults — “yegua,” “burro” (donkey, dimwit), “vaca,” “cerdo” (pig). The animal is neutral; the contempt is in pointing it at a person.
Here it flies in a heated classroom game (“¡yegua!”), and the target snaps back “¿cómo me llamaste?” — a clear sign it was heard as an insult, not a joke. Regional force varies: in parts of Central America and the Caribbean it leans toward “stupid,” while elsewhere it stresses crudeness. Either way it’s an offensive, demeaning insult — worth recognising so you catch it, but not one for a learner to use.
