Why do Mexicans call glue “Resistol”?

Resistol is technically a trademark, but in Mexico it’s become the default word for white craft glue — the way “Sellotape” or “Kleenex” work in English. Reach for el Resistol and everyone knows you mean the bottle of glue, whatever the actual label says. The brand name itself is a Spanglish coinage from English “resist + all,” and it’s been a carpentry and classroom staple for over seventy years.

This kind of genericized trademark (marca registrada that turns into a common noun) is everywhere in Spanish: Diurex for tape, Kotex, Maizena. In the clip, someone scrambling to fix a prop calls out for the glue mid-repair. Note: the brand also gave Latin America the grim term resistoleros for street kids who once huffed it — useful context, not a sense you’d teach as everyday vocabulary.
