Why do Argentines say “básquet” instead of “baloncesto”?

Spanish has at least three words for basketball, and which one a speaker uses says a lot about where they’re from. Spain says baloncesto. Mexico tends to say básquetbol, the fuller borrowing from English. Argentina, Uruguay, and the rest of the Southern Cone clip the word back down to básquet, dropping the bol entirely. The Argentine version is the shortest of the three.

This clip is an Argentine narrator running through a Forbes ranking of Americans who climbed from poverty to wealth. When LeBron James shows up, the narrator calls him a básquet player. The word, said in a Buenos Aires accent, marks the speaker as Rioplatense in one syllable.
