What does “la he liado” mean in Spanish?

Spaniards reach for liarla (“to mess it up”) when something has gone wrong. The phrase uses the feminine pronoun la with no clear noun: it stands in for “the thing, the situation,” whatever just got tangled. La he liado, la liaste tú, la lió Pedro. Latin America rarely uses this construction; Mexicans say la regué (literally “I watered it”), and Argentinians say la mandé al frente or me mandé una macana. The feminine clitic la with no antecedent is a small but reliable Castilian marker.

In this clip, a young woman calls her mother to confess a laundry disaster: “Mamá, que la he cagado. He hecho la colada, pero...” (“Mom, I’ve messed it up. I did the laundry, but...”).
