What does “subir como la espuma” mean in Spanish?
Subir como la espuma (“to rise like foam”) is a pan-Spanish idiom for someone or something that climbs fast. The image comes from the head of foam on a freshly poured beer or the rising froth on milk: it grows quickly and visibly. Spanish speakers across Spain, Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia use it for actors, athletes, politicians, and brands on a hot streak. Equivalent English idioms (“to take off,” “to skyrocket”) don’t quite carry the same casual, café-counter feeling.
This clip is a Colombian Spanish entertainment-news segment about Mexican actor Diego Luna: “sigue subiendo en Hollywood como la espuma” (“he keeps rising in Hollywood like foam”). Luna’s casting in the new Scarface gives the idiom a fresh peg.
