What does “voie” mean at a French train station?

At a French station the departure board gives you une voie — the numbered track the train stands on. Le quai is the platform you wait on, and one platform can serve two tracks, so the number that actually finds your train is the voie. It is often posted only around twenty minutes before departure, which is why a whole concourse looks up at the board at the same moment.

On board, the carriages are numbered too, and SNCF calls them voitures, not wagons — announcements say voiture 12. In railway terminology wagon is freight; in everyday speech plenty of passengers still say it anyway.
