What does “refiler” mean in French slang?

Refiler is a colloquial French verb meaning “to slip or pass off something dodgy” onto someone else. It often shows up in confessional moments where someone is trying to dodge blame: “c’est Mouja qui m’a refilé ça” (“Mouja was the one who slipped me that”). English has no exact equivalent: “to slip me” is too neutral, “to palm off on me” is too transactional.

The verb belongs to the family of filer (“to give, to pass”), and it’s almost always used about something the speaker would rather not own up to: dodgy weed, a bad cold, a problem at work, a borrowed thing they didn’t return. In this father-son confrontation, m’a refilé is the son’s whole defense.
