What does “piquer” mean in French slang?

Piquer starts out as to sting or prick — a bee, a needle, mustard that ça pique. In casual speech it also means to swipe something: il veut me la piquer is “he wants to nick it off me,” and je me suis fait piquer mon vélo is “my bike got stolen.” It is informal rather than rude, used as easily about a borrowed jumper as about real theft.

The literal sense is still everywhere in the same week’s vocabulary: une piqûre is both an insect bite and the injection you get at the doctor’s, and piquant describes food with a kick. Whether a given piquer is a needle or a theft is settled entirely by what is being pricked or taken.
