What is “hypokhâgne” in the French education system?
Hypokhâgne (often informally spelled hypocagne or hippocagne) is the first year of France’s elite humanities prep track for the grandes écoles. After the baccalauréat, students who want to enter top schools like the École Normale Supérieure spend two years in prépa: the first year is hypokhâgne, the second is khâgne. The track is famous for grueling reading lists, intensive writing, and a mind formed by Latin, Greek, philosophy, history, and literature. Saying someone “a fait hypokhâgne” is shorthand in French conversation for a particular bookish, literary cast of mind.
In this clip, a French speaker explains a friend’s intellectual depth by mentioning her hypokhâgne years. The reference does the heavy lifting; no further explanation is needed for French listeners.
