What does “carte gradée” mean for collectors in French?

Une carte gradée is a trading card that’s been professionally inspected, scored from 1 to 10, and sealed in a tamper-proof case. Gradée comes straight from English “to grade,” conjugated like a normal French verb — a neat example of how French absorbs hobby vocabulary. For collectors it’s a high-stakes word: a top-grade card can be worth many times the same card ungraded.

Graders judge four things — centring, corners, edges, surface — before locking the card in its slab with a unique certification number.
