What does “là” mean at the end of a French sentence?
Textbooks teach là as “there,” and it still can mean that. But in real speech it often expands to point at the current place, moment, or situation: je suis là is “I’m here,” and tu es sérieux, là ? is “are you serious right now?” Là, je peux pas is “I can’t at the moment” — no distance implied at all.
Tacked onto the end of a sentence, là adds insistence or immediacy — arrête là, tu exagères là — without changing what the sentence says. That sentence-final là turns up across informal French and is especially frequent in Quebec French, where it can punctuate almost any clause and often works as a filler rather than as emphasis.
