What does “moi non plus” mean in French?

Moi aussi is “me too.” Its negative counterpart is moi non plus, “me neither,” and French keeps the two apart. If someone says je n’aime pas ça, agreeing with them means moi non plus — moi aussi after a negative sentence is the classic learner slip. The same swap applies across the other pronouns: lui non plus, nous non plus, eux non plus.

The phrase is famous in its own right thanks to Serge Gainsbourg’s 1969 duet Je t’aime… moi non plus. He took the title from a line attributed to Salvador Dalí about Picasso — “Picasso is a communist; me neither” — which is the joke in miniature: the reply does not match the sentence before it.
