What does “t’inquiète” mean in French?

T’inquiète looks like an instruction to start worrying. It means the opposite: “don’t worry, it’s fine.” It is ne t’inquiète pas with both halves of the negation worn away — the ne first, then the pas — leaving a phrase that carries the negative meaning purely by habit. It is written without an s, because underneath it is still an imperative.

T’occupe is built the same way, from ne t’occupe pas de ça, and means “never mind” or, less kindly, “mind your own business.” Both live in speech far more than in writing; when you are writing or addressing someone as vous, the full form comes back: ne vous inquiétez pas.
