What does “мягко говоря” mean in Russian?
Мягко говоря means “to put it mildly” — or, equally, “to say the least.” The phrase is built from мягко (“softly”) + говоря (“speaking”), and that transparent construction is exactly what makes it so reusable. Slip it before or after a verdict and you instantly signal that the reality is worse than what you just said. It works everywhere: casual conversation, newspaper commentary, diplomatic speeches.
In this clip, a Moscow water-lantern festival unravels spectacularly — too few lanterns, poor quality ones that sank or caught fire, and a downpour to finish — and the narrator sums it up in one neat line: И прошел он, мягко говоря, не очень (“And it went, to put it mildly, not great”). The understatement lands because “not great” is doing so much heavy lifting. You’ll hear the phrase in the same position in everyday Russian: Он, мягко говоря, опоздал (“He was, to put it mildly, late”), Ситуация, мягко говоря, непростая (“The situation is, to say the least, not simple”). Unlike the blunter честно говоря (“frankly speaking”), мягко говоря always softens rather than sharpens — the speaker is being pointed, but politely so.
