What does “nepoate” mean in Romanian?
Literally nepot means “nephew” or “grandson,” and nepoate is its vocative — the “hey, you” form used when calling someone. But Romanian shopkeepers and older speakers use it far beyond family: an elder greets any younger person with Nepoate! as warm, familiar address, the way an English speaker might say “son” or “young man” to someone much younger. It signals friendliness, not kinship, so a vendor can call a total stranger their “nephew.”
The greeting Bună ziua, nepoate! (“Good day, nephew!”) frames the whole exchange as cozy and informal — the speaker positions herself as the older, fond relative. The same move works with mătușă (auntie), bunicuțo (granny), or nea for an older man. The word descends from Latin nepōs, nepōtem (root of Italian nipote and French neveu), and its double duty — “nephew” and “grandson” at once — is inherited straight from Latin, where nepos covered both.
