What does “city break” mean in Romanian?
In Romanian, a city break is a short urban getaway of two or three days, usually flying off to a foreign city for the weekend. Romanian borrowed the English phrase whole, pronunciation and all, and treats it as one ordinary noun. The giveaway that it has fully naturalised: it takes the native plural ending, so several of them become city break-uri — English words, Romanian grammar.
The term is British in origin and spread as cheap weekend flights made quick city trips a category of their own, distinct from a long beach holiday. In the clip a wife bargaining over a role-swap names her price: a perfume, a handbag, and un city break la Roma — a weekend in Rome. Note the Romanian neuter plural at work in travel ads: city break-urile (“the city breaks”), with -uri and the definite article -le glued straight onto the English root.
