What does “nu am chef” mean in Romanian?

Nu am chef is how Romanians actually turn something down: not “I don’t want to” (nu vreau) but “I’m not in the mood.” Chef is your appetite or mood to do a thing, so saying you don’t have it is softer and far more natural than a flat refusal. In speech it usually contracts to n-am chef — the everyday, slightly blunt way to pass on an offer.

You add what you’re not up for with de: n-am chef de cafea (“not in the mood for coffee”), n-am chef de nimic (“I don’t feel like anything”). Flip it positive and am chef de means you’re keen — am chef de o plimbare (“I feel like a walk”). The word chef is a Turkish loan, from keyif (Ottoman Turkish keyf, ultimately Arabic kayf, “pleasure, good mood”) — one of many Ottoman-era borrowings in Romanian. On its own chef can also mean a party or feast, the other side of being in high spirits.
