What does “garota pikmi” mean in Portuguese?
A garota pikmi is Brazilian internet slang for a “pick-me girl”: a girl who plays up being low-maintenance and “not like other girls” to win approval, especially from men. Pikmi is just the English “pick-me” spelled the way Brazilians say it. The label is mocking, not flattering — calling someone pikmi says she’s performing quirkiness for validation rather than just being herself.
The English term is often traced to Meredith Grey’s “Pick me, choose me, love me” plea on Grey’s Anatomy, though it really spread as slang through Twitter and TikTok. The stereotype is built from choices: sneakers over heels, maquiagem básica over heavy makeup, “I’d rather eat pizza than salad like other girls.” The clip is exactly that test — the speaker picks the despojado jeans-and-tênis look, the simple makeup, and keeps insisting eu não sou pikmi (“I’m not a pick-me”). Note the spelling drift: pick-me → pikmi, the same phonetic respelling Portuguese gives many English loanwords. The term is also criticised in Brazil as misogynist, since it polices women by ranking them against each other.
