What does “figurinha” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?

figurinha
Brazilian collecting culture
a collectible sticker — the currency of World Cup album season

A figurinha is a collectible sticker, and in Brazil that mostly means the World Cup album: every four years whole classrooms trade duplicates, hunt the missing players and race to complete the álbum. The word is figura (“figure, picture”) plus the diminutive -inha, and it now covers messaging stickers too — the ones you fire into a WhatsApp chat.

The trading vocabulary comes with it: repetida for a duplicate, pacotinho for a packet, colar for sticking one in. Two idioms outlived the albums: figurinha carimbada describes a familiar face who turns up at every event, and figurinha difícil is someone hard to pin down.
