Nossa, você freiou? Nem percebi
A2 Portuguese poslechová cvičení · Brazilská portugalština · Vybráno pro začátečníci
Does “perceber” mean notice or understand in Portuguese?
Perceber covers a range of senses across the Portuguese-speaking world, and the emphasis shifts by variety. In this Brazilian clip, nem percebi means “I didn’t even notice” — the everyday sense of noticing or realizing. In Portugal, perceber is especially common for “understand,” as in não percebo (“I don’t understand”). Both senses exist on each side; only the default feel changes.
The Portuguese sense is not an invention: nineteenth-century Brazilian writing used perceber for “understand” too, and Brazil later handed that job to entender and compreender. Both are understood everywhere, which makes them the safe choice. For “notice,” Brazil also says reparar or notar; Portugal uses aperceber-se de.
