What does “gostoso” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?

Gostoso comes from gosto, “taste,” but Brazilians apply it to anything that feels good. Food is gostosa; so is a nap (um sono gostoso), a shower, a breeze, an unhurried Sunday. Point it at a person, though, and it stops meaning “delightful” and turns flirtatious and sexualized — best avoided for a stranger, since it reads as a come-on, not a compliment.

The -oso suffix means “full of,” so gostoso is literally “full of taste” — the same build as carinhoso (affectionate, full of carinho) and cheiroso (sweet-smelling). For food alone, delicioso and saboroso stay safely neutral. Portugal leans on saboroso and plain bom, and hears the Brazilian gostoso as noticeably warmer.
