What does “fixe” mean in Portuguese?
In Portugal, fixe is the everyday word for “cool” or “nice” — for a plan, a person, or just good news (“Fixe!”). It’s the cleanest dialect tell going: a Brazilian would say legal in exactly the same spot, never fixe. Watch the spelling trap, too — that x is pronounced “sh,” so fixe sounds like “FEESH,” not “FIX.”
You’ll hear it everywhere in casual European Portuguese: que fixe! (“how cool!”), é um gajo fixe (“he’s a cool guy”), often paired with bué (“loads”) — bué da fixe, “really cool.” Said of a person, it can also mean someone laid-back and trustworthy. The word likely entered Portuguese from French and picked up its “cool” sense under English influence; it was popular enough to anchor a 1986 presidential campaign slogan, Soares é fixe. In the clip, amid a debate about once-forbidden words, someone reacts with tá sendo fixe — “this is being fun/cool” — a perfectly natural Portugal-PT aside.
