What does “bexiga” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?

Textbooks teach balão for balloon, but across much of Brazil — especially São Paulo — the everyday word for a party balloon is bexiga. Its first meaning is “bladder,” so calling a balloon a bexiga is really naming it after the inflatable animal bladders people once blew up for fun. Both words are correct; which one you hear simply tells you where in Brazil you are.

Bexiga comes from Latin vēsīca, “bladder” — the same root behind Spanish vejiga. In the plural, bexigas also historically meant “smallpox” (from the blister-like pustules), which is why an old São Paulo neighborhood is named Bexiga. Meanwhile balão is a French borrowing (ballon) and the default in Rio. In the clip you can hear the switch live: the kids cheer “ó, o balão!” as it floats, then the moment it lands the grandmother’s win is announced with “a bexiga! a bexiga!” — the same object, two regional names in one breath.
