In Brazil, tetê is the cozy nursery word for a baby’s bottle or feeding — the kind of word parents and toddlers use, never the textbook mamadeira. The giveaway phrase is “hora do tetê”: “bottle time,” the cue that it’s time to eat. It echoes teta (teat/breast) and patterns like other doubled baby words such as mamá, so a Brazilian hears “feeding” the instant a small child says it.

You’ll only meet tetê around small children: a parent cooing “hora do tetê” at a fussing baby, or a toddler tugging a sleeve and asking for tetê. It belongs to the same affectionate baby-talk register as papá (food), dodói (a hurt), and neném (baby) — the word used throughout this clip.
