What does “skapnąć się” mean in Polish?

Polish has a wonderfully expressive colloquial verb: skapnąć się, literally something like “to drip on oneself.” In everyday speech it means “to finally catch on” or “to realize (after being slow about it).” When the speaker says “Dopiero po 7 latach się skapnął!” (“He only caught on after 7 years!”) about a husband suspecting his wife of an affair, the verb does the comedic work. It implies the husband should have realized much earlier.

Standard Polish for “to realize” is zorientować się or zrozumieć. Skapnął się is colloquial, slightly mocking, and always implies the realization came late. The verb distinguishes Polish heard in offices from Polish heard between friends.
