What does “de bios” mean in Dutch?

Dutch speakers rarely say the full word bioscoop in casual conversation — they clip it to de bios. So “naar de bioscoop gaan” becomes the more natural “naar de bios gaan.” Textbooks teach the full form, but anyone who speaks like a local uses the short one. Once you know it, you’ll hear it constantly — it’s the default in everyday speech across the Netherlands.

The clip catches it in action: friends are mid-argument, and one says “Alleen als we naar de bios gaan” — “Only if we go to the cinema.” No ceremony, just the clipped form as the natural choice. The full word bioscoop itself comes from Greek roots (bios, life + skopeō, to look), the same roots behind “bioscope,” an early name for the moving-picture projector. Dutch clipped the everyday word down to just the first syllable cluster, keeping the stress and dropping the rest.
