What does “pittig” mean in Dutch?
Pittig literally means spicy — the kind of heat in a chilli or a sharp cheese. But Dutch uses it for anything that stings or challenges: a pittige discussie (a heated debate), pittig rijden (driving hard), or 30-degree training weather that pushes your body to its limits. The word comes from pit, the hard kernel at the core of a fruit — that inner intensity is what the adjective carries into every domain.
When a Dutch footballer preparing for a World Cup in America says the heat is pittig, he is borrowing the food word and applying it to physical endurance — the same “bite” that makes a pepper sharp makes a training session brutal. You will hear the same transfer in everyday speech: pittige les (a tough class), pittig tempo (a fierce pace), even pittig leuk in youth slang (seriously fun). One word, one core idea — intensity — applied wherever Dutch needs a single adjective that bites.
