What does “doelgroep” mean in Dutch?

Doel means goal or target; groep means group. Stick them together and you get doelgroep — the specific audience or group a message, product, or campaign is aimed at. It is one of Dutch’s most productive compound patterns: two concrete nouns fused into one precise term. Once you see the join, you can decode and build dozens of similar words on sight.

Nidal uses it in his farewell to Ketnet, Flemish children’s television: he says the thing he’ll miss most is having “a great excuse to do the most chaotic, dumb, and crazy things for the best doelgroep ever” — meaning his young viewers. The word turns up constantly in journalism, marketing briefs, policy documents, and education: de doelgroep bereiken (“to reach the target audience”), een brede doelgroep (“a wide target group”). The compound pattern is everywhere: doelstelling (objective, from doel + stelling), doeltreffend (effective, literally “target-hitting”), leeftijdsgroep (age group), beroepsgroep (professional group).
