What does “stappen gaan” mean in Dutch?
Gaan stappen is the everyday Dutch phrase for a night out — hitting the bars and clubs. It comes from stappen (“to step/walk”), but in informal speech the stepping is figurative: you’re stepping out into the night. The clip’s interviewee sums up a generational shift in one line: “het stappen is gewoon minder geworden” — going out has simply declined — as Renesse’s last disco prepares to close.
The broader verb uitgaan (to go out) is the neutral, textbook form; stappen is the colloquial, social one — the word young Dutch speakers actually use when they mean a proper night out with loud music and late hours. You’ll hear “Gaan we stappen vanavond?” (“Are we going out tonight?”) and “Ik ben laat thuisgekomen — ik ben gaan stappen” (“I got home late — I went out”). The Renesse clip shows the word carrying real cultural weight: once a coastal village of fifteen discos drawing Dutch youth every summer, it now has almost none. That social ritual — het stappen — is what the locals describe as fading alongside the clubs themselves.
