What does “overspanning” mean in Dutch?
Overspanning is the Dutch term for stress-induced overexertion — not just feeling tired, but a recognised stress condition (Dutch GPs even follow a clinical guideline on overspanning en burn-out). It’s broadly the lighter, earlier stage before burn-out: the tension (spanning) has tipped over (over), but the deep, lasting exhaustion of burn-out hasn’t set in. Symptoms include anxiety, irritability, and trouble coping with everyday demands.
The adjective form is overspannen — “ik ben overspannen” is the everyday phrase; “klachten van overspanning” (“symptoms of overspanning”) is the clinical phrasing. Dutch medicine tends to treat the two as points on one continuum rather than a strict ladder: overspanning typically eases in weeks to a few months, while burn-out is the prolonged, more severe form — exhaustion-driven and usually lasting six months or more. In the clip, popular YouTuber Dylan Haegens admits — after going silent for four weeks — “ik heb last gehad van angsten, klachten van overspanning” (“I’ve been struggling with anxiety and symptoms of overspanning”). The candid first-person admission, from one of the Netherlands' best-known creators, makes the word land in a way no dictionary entry could.
