What’s the difference between a “Spitzname” and an “Ingame-Tag” in German?

A Spitzname is an ordinary nickname — friends, family, anyone might give you one. An Ingame-Tag (or Ingame-Name) is different: the invented handle you go by only inside a video game, borrowed straight from English “in-game.” The two aren’t interchangeable, which is exactly the joke in this clip: a girlfriend has spent 15 years calling her boyfriend’s oldest friend by his Ingame-Tag, “Gockelpanzer,” without ever learning his real name is Max.

German gaming vocabulary borrows heavily and directly from English — zocken (“to game,” itself German slang), Ingame, and Tag all sit comfortably next to native words like Spitzname. The mix-up in the clip works precisely because a gaming handle can completely eclipse someone’s real identity within a friend group, even for over a decade.
