What does “von uns gehen” mean in German?
Von uns gehen is a common German euphemism for dying — the same register as English “passed away.” It keeps death at a respectful distance: er ist von uns gegangen (“he has passed away”) appears in obituaries, condolence cards, and formal announcements. What makes the phrase stick is its literal image: the person doesn’t die, they simply go from us — a gentle departure rather than an ending.
In this clip, the narrator uses the phrase with full solemnity for whale Timmy — “traurigerweise vor der Insel Dänemark tatsächlich von uns ging” (“sadly, off the coast of Denmark, he actually passed away”) — then immediately reveals that Timmy’s remains are being turned into biodiesel. The bathos is instant: the elevated euphemism collides head-on with industrial reality. The collision is what makes the register lesson memorable. For comparison, Germans also say sterben (neutral, clinical), einschlafen (“fall asleep,” softer still), or das Zeitliche segnen (“bless the temporal,” archaic and slightly ironic). Von uns gehen sits in the middle — warm and formal, the default for public grief.
