What does “Schnäppchen” mean in German?
Schnäppchen means a bargain — something good you got for very little money. Germans use it seriously in shops and sales, but also with a dry smile when a deal is suspiciously cheap. In this clip, a speaker rents a first flat for 100 a month, calls it a Schnäppchen, then reveals the flat is just 6 square metres. The word earns the same eye-roll as “a steal” in English.
In the clip the speaker celebrates a first flat — „endlich meine allererste Wohnung und das nur für 100 im Monat“ (”finally my very first flat, and only 100 a month“) — and calls it a Schnäppchen, adding that the price is „ein bisschen sehr wenig, aber kann ja nicht so schlimm sein, oder?” (“a bit very cheap, but it can’t be that bad, right?”). Then comes the catch: the flat is just 6 m². Plain examples: - “Die Jacke war ein echtes Schnäppchen.” — The jacket was a real bargain. - “Im Sommerschlussverkauf gibt es viele Schnäppchen.” — In the summer sale there are lots of bargains. - “5 Euro? Das ist ein Schnäppchen!” — 5 euros? That’s a steal! Usage notes: It’s a friendly, everyday word, common in shopping, sales, and ads (you’ll hear “Schnäppchen-Preis”, bargain price). Like “a steal” in English, it can also be said with a smile when something is suspiciously cheap — exactly as in this clip.
