What does “Verlobter” mean in German?
German keeps “boyfriend” and “fiancé” as two entirely different words. Freund can mean friend or boyfriend — the ambiguity is built in. But once you’re engaged, the language upgrades the label: he becomes your Verlobter, she becomes your Verlobte. Both are adjectival nouns built from the past participle of sich verloben (to get engaged), so the ending shifts with gender and case: meinen Verlobten in the accusative.
The root goes deep: verloben is built on loben (“praise”) and geloben (“to vow”). Many etymologists tie this family to the ancient root leubh- (“to care, desire, love”) — behind English “love” and “believe” and Latin-derived “libido” — though the deeper origin of the praise-words loben/Lob themselves is debated. Either way, an engagement is at its core a pledge. Germans also have a tidy three-word summary of the relationship arc: verliebt, verlobt, verheiratet — in love, engaged, married.
