What does “egy árva sem” mean in Hungarian?

Hungarian has a vivid idiom for “not a single penny”: egy árva fillér sem (“not even an orphan filler”), often shortened to egy árva sem. The image is bleak: a single coin, all alone, like an orphan, and the speaker doesn’t even have that one. Hungarians reach for the phrase when they want to dramatize how broke they are. It can hit harder than the English “not a red cent” because árva (“orphan”) drags in real emotional weight.

In this clip, a man begs his friend for a loan: “Egy árva annyit se tudok adni” (“I can’t give you even an orphan’s worth”). The fillér disappeared from circulation in 1999, but the idiom outlived it, like the English “two bits.”
