What does “lebukik” mean in Hungarian?

Lebukik literally means to duck or dive downward (the sun “lebukik” behind the hills). But in everyday speech it is the go-to word for getting caught red-handed: the cheater, the liar, the secret affair all “lebuknak.” The image fits — you were keeping your head above water, then you went under and got found out. The noun is lebukás (a getting-caught, an exposure).

This whole classroom story turns on whether the csaló (cheater) will lebukik on the dolgozat (the written test/quiz — itself a great B1 word). Useful relatives from the same bukik (to fall/fail) root: megbukik can mean to flunk an exam or, of a government, to fall. So one little verb stretches from a sunset to a failed test to a toppled minister — all built on the idea of going down.
