What are “pesche tabacchiere” in Italian?

A pesca tabacchiera is the flat, saucer-shaped peach the rest of the world calls a doughnut or Saturn peach — and the Italian name is the charm. A tabacchiera was a snuffbox, the round flat tin gentlemen carried their tobacco in, so the squashed fruit got named after its lookalike lid. They are prized as sweeter, less fuzzy and almost almond-scented, the taste of an Italian summer market.

The variety has been grown for two centuries on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, where sun and cool nights suit it. The same market haul in the clip name-checks other Italian fruit worth knowing: nespole (loquats, an early-summer fruit) and pesche noci — literally “nut peaches,” the Italian word for nectarines.
