What does “sfigato” mean in Italian slang?
Sfigato is everyday Italian slang sitting between “loser,” “dork,” and plain “unlucky.” Call yourself a musicista sfigato and you mean a broke, going-nowhere musician — half self-deprecation, half luck complaint. It comes from sfiga, “rotten luck,” so at root a sfigato is someone life keeps shortchanging; from there it broadened into “uncool, not one of the in-crowd.” It’s casual and a little crude — fine with friends, not at the office.
The feminine is sfigata, and the noun sfiga powers the everyday groan Che sfiga! — “What rotten luck!” The s- prefix is the engine: it reverses the (vulgar) base figa, the way English dis- flips a word — hence the original sense of being chronically out of luck. Note the register before deploying it: it’s vivid and very common in speech, but it carries an earthy edge.
