What does “quando mai?” mean in Italian?

Italian has a rhetorical question that doesn’t translate literally: Quando mai? (“when ever?”). Italians don’t actually want to know when. It’s a sarcastic dismissal closer to English “as if!”, “yeah right,” or “since when?” When someone in this clip says Quando mai?, they’re rejecting the previous statement as obvious nonsense.

Quando mai? pairs naturally with figuriamoci (literally “let’s imagine,” meaning “as if!”) and self-deprecating phrases like stato zitto come un cretino (“kept quiet like an idiot”). Together they form the everyday voice of Italian skepticism. Textbooks teach the literal question; native speech uses it almost only sarcastically.
