What is the “KUA” in Indonesia?

KUA stands for Kantor Urusan Agama, “Office of Religious Affairs.” Every Indonesian district has one, and it’s where Muslim couples register marriages, file divorces, and handle religious paperwork. KUAs are run by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and managed locally by an amil or penghulu (officiant). For most Indonesian Muslims, the KUA is the only government office they’ll ever truly need outside of an ID card or passport. That’s why it shows up so often in Indonesian sitcoms: it’s the bureaucratic background of family life.

This clip is a comedy bit where a man tries to slip a bribe to a KUA clerk for faster service. The clerk refuses, lecturing him about integritas (“integrity”).
