What does “deewaar” mean in Hindi?

Tracing the Great Wall of China, the clip notes how it grew: «यह दीवार तीन हज़ार सात सौ मील लंबी» (“this wall stretched 3,700 miles”). दीवार (deewaar) is the everyday Hindi word for a wall, borrowed from Persian, like much of Hindustani’s daily vocabulary.

Indians know it instantly from cinema: Deewaar, the 1975 Amitabh Bachchan classic, made the word iconic. It also turns metaphorical, a दीवार between two people is an emotional barrier. The clip pairs it with अजगर (ajgar, “python”), describing the wall snaking across the countryside “like a python.” Concrete and poetic at once.
