What is “Chhath Puja”?
Chhath Puja is a four-day Hindu festival celebrated mainly in Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh, dedicated to the sun god Surya and the goddess Chhathi Maiya. On the third day, women fast all day and stand in rivers or ponds at sunset, offering fruit and thekua (a wheat-and-jaggery sweet) directly to the setting sun. They return at dawn for the same ritual at sunrise. Chhath is one of the few Hindu festivals where worship happens in open water, facing the sun, with no priest as intermediary.
This clip is a multi-state Indian family roasting each other’s festival calendars: the speaker tells her Bihari sister-in-law that “बिहारी का छठ होता है” (“Biharis have Chhath”).
