What does 桃花运 (táohuāyùn) mean in Chinese?
桃花运 (táohuāyùn) means being lucky in love: a run of romantic attention coming your way. 桃花 (táohuā) is the peach blossom, a flower long associated with spring romance in Chinese culture, and 运 (yùn) means luck or fortune. To say someone 走桃花运 (zǒu táohuāyùn) is to say love is finding them, not that they are hunting for it. The phrase is used constantly in fortune-telling, horoscopes, and everyday gossip.
The association traces back to a Tang Dynasty poem by Cui Hu (崔护): he met a beautiful girl at a house framed by peach blossoms in spring, returned a year later to find her gone, and wrote a famous lament on the door. The image of spring peach blossoms as the backdrop for a love story fixed the flower as a symbol of romantic opportunity. In the clip, the presenter admits asking ChatGPT about her own 桃花: “我经常会问ChatGPT,我最近的桃花怎样?” The companion word 桃花 (without 运) can also simply mean a person who attracts romantic interest — “她是我的桃花” can mean “she is my romantic fate.”
