Why do Taiwanese owners call golden retrievers “阿金”?

阿金 (ā-jīn) is the affectionate Taiwanese Mandarin nickname for a golden retriever. The character 金 means “gold,” and the 阿 prefix is a familiar address marker borrowed from Taiwanese Hokkien, used in front of names and short forms to soften them: 阿公 (“grandpa”), 阿嬤 (“grandma”), 阿明 (“Mingo, dear Ming”). Stack them and you get a name that works as both a generic dog-name and a personal one. Many Taiwanese families with a golden actually call the dog 阿金; vets and groomers know to use it the way American shelters use “Buddy.”
