What does “bříško” mean in Czech?
Czech loves diminutives, and bříško is one of the most-used: a small, tender form of břicho (“belly”). Czechs use bříško across the whole arc of life: a small child’s tummy, a beloved pet’s underside, and especially a pregnant woman’s bump. The word carries warmth that břicho alone doesn’t, and Czech mothers, midwives, and partners reach for it in conversation, songs, and birthday wishes.
This clip is an interview with a Czech pop singer about her upcoming concert at O2 Universum, performed while pregnant. She uses bříško to talk about the bump as she goes on stage, mixing professional nerves with the affectionate Czech word. The whole interview also nods to Český slavík, the long-running Czech music popularity award since 1962.
