What is 'pětka' in Czech school grades?
Pětka is a five. In Czech schools, grades run 1 to 5 with 1 being the best, so a pětka is the failing mark, the one parents dread on a report card. Collect enough and you propadneš (get held back). Diminutives are universal in Czech school talk: jednička for a top mark, pětka for the worst.
In this PSA, Jirka piles up pětky at a school that can’t adapt to him: « Ať se učím, jak chci, stejně dostanu pětku » (no matter how hard I study, I still get a pětka). His mum transfers him to a different school where he thrives and ends up sent to competitions. The grade was the symptom.
