What does “أفعوانية” mean in Arabic?

أفعوانية is the standard Arabic word for a roller coaster, and the name is built right into the shape of the ride. It comes from أفعوان — the male or large snake — which itself comes from أفعى (snake). The coiling, winding track that loops overhead looks exactly like a great serpent stretched across the sky, so Arabic simply named the ride after it. Once you see the snake, you can’t unsee it.

The morphology is a neat three-step chain: أفعى (snake) → أفعوان (the augmentative “big/male snake,” built with the -wān pattern) → أفعوانية (the feminine noun used for the ride itself).
